Veritas: Threads Of Fatality. Sep 20th 2020
Written by Will Harrison
Veritas: Threads of Fatality - rocks hard and doesn’t stop until your face has melted! The opening track, Prelude To The Sacrament – A hard hitting track that starts out with soothing sounds in a monastery and hammers into a great beginning number! My favorite tracks are: Frail, Morbid State, Fate’s Warning and Starlight - great guitar riffs, grilling vocals and great hard rock, also these songs are very relatable to me at this moment of my life. Listening to this album makes me visualize dragons fighting unicorns bearing my face on their heads, LOL Warning I may have had too much Cotton Candy Cap’n Crunch before writing this! That stuff makes you see things, just saying. This album is very well done, it is a sound recording, it’s all leveled out properly, with great vocals and guitar riffs to die for! Get yourself a copy of this album today, digital downloads are available as well. If you have to go outside your house to get it? Please wear a mask! Available at: https://veritas.rocks/ https://veritasrocks.bandcamp.com/releases On a side note thanks to the Band for mentioning me in the credits area of the album's fold out! It made my day! |
Kali Ra: The Monarch. Mar 27 2020
Written by Will Harrison
In this time of Isolation, quarantines and Dystopian fears.. Here is something to take your mind off all of that - It’s the new album by Kali- Ra aka “The Monarch”! I’ve known Front-man David Goad for quite some time, and he is always a delight to chat with, I mean He really gets into his character of being the embodiment of a modern day David Bowie. I don’t joke, I’ve never had a boring interview with him. Whether he’s talking of swimming in a cocaine filled swimming pool or another of his creative uh experiences, he is also down to earth. He has a deep passionate heart that never quits. Back to the music – this is a powerful album invoking all of your main senses, causing flashbacks or better days or not so better days, depending on your past I guess? I feel each song connects to a different major music era, such as the 70s (Neon Vain), 80s (Sunset Boulevard), 90s (Gaslight) and (Tar) has a real spiritual feel to it! I’m really digging this album, It’s got superior sound quality, all of the back tracks and effects are great, it’s leveled out wonderfully. Go get on www.bandcamp.com and buy this album or buy all of his albums – They actually have a special deal where you can do just that! |
The Amity Affliction: Everyone Loves You...Once You Leave Them. Mar 25th 2020
Written by Will Harrison
The Amity Affliction, is a band straight out of Brisbane, Australia and they are killing it literally! I picked up their new album “Everyone Loves You ... Once You Leave Them”, at Target of all places LOL, ah well who cares? I’ve found some good music there! I was instantly hooked on their melodic to grungy vocals and their deep and honest lyrics. Joel Birch - Vocals, Ahren Stringer - Bass, Vocals and Dan Brown - guitars make up The Amity Affliction they are put under the genres Metalcore/Post - Hardcore but I would add Alternative EMO in there as well. They have some dark songs like - Coffin, All My Friends Are Dead, Born To lose to name a few but the lyrics are very honest, which is important to me, very relatable. The album was dark, dusty and haunting but still new and unique and holds it’s own. The album was released in February and is doing well. Go check it out for yourself! Follow them on social media and go to their site and show support! http://www.theamityaffliction.net |

Get ready for some killer metal music! Coming your way from Veritas! Awhile back they had contacted me about promoting them, and always I’m down to work with most every type of musician as long as you are not a D-Bag or Narcissist LOL! That being said these guys are really cool to talk with, you can tell that they really love what they do and are true hard rockers! Because of that I really can't wait until they make it down our way to OKC! You can now get both and EP (which I have a copy of courtesy of the band!) or a full length album from these guys! They are all over the map so it won't be hard to get a copy of their music! The band consist of: Denny Anthony - Vocals, Greg Wenk - Guitars, Geno Alberico - Bass and Mark Zonder - drums! These guys are all stellar musicians and when they get together they have their own unique harmony in both vocals and instruments! It’s like nothing Ive ever heard before, the closest would probably be Speed Metal vocals mashed with a hardcore feel! Any way, the point is get out their and get yourself a copy or two of their self titled album! You won’t regret it! |
First Jason : Lord Of The Lake. Oct 17 2019
Written by Will Harrison
Lord of the Lake, is the fourth album by Chicago based Heavy Metal band “First Jason”. The band’s name comes from Vocalist, Ari Lehman he was the first to portray Jason Voorhees in the original Horror movie Friday the 13th! So now it all makes sense right? The band consist of vocalist, Ari Lehman - Guitarist, Eddie Machete - Bassist, Johnny Danger and Prince Fabian on Drums. The album, consist of five tracks all cleverly titled in reference to the Jason movies. They are as follows: Voorhees is the name - Kill for Mother - Lord of the Lake - Dark is the Deep and Rising to the surface. It’s good, fun, Horror-raged Heavy Metal and It’s even more fun if you get the references or if you’re a fan of the films. Me I just put on my Jason Mask and enjoy it even more! Of course it’s cheesy and fun and that’s why it’s fun! I have to recommend this soon to be classic . Pick you up a copy or download it from your favorite music carriers |
Left To Die: Take Me Back Home. Sept 17 2019
Written by Will Harrison Left To Die’s new single “Take Me Back Home”, really does just that, take you back home. Takes me back to a time when rock was simple and heartfelt. Back from a time when you could both hear the lyrics and relate to them. Take Me Back Home is a deep song about relationships of new and old, here and gone and handling gain or the loss of both. A sweet song of redemption and forgiveness an most often acceptance. These guys have been through lot as a band as well as on a personal level. It’s an honor to know these guys and to be allowed to do this write-up! I meant for this one to be posted sooner but it’s been a busy year! ABYSSAL RITES: SYNESTHESIA RITUAL - Raw, Unrelenting, Damn Good! Jun 25 2019
Written by Patrick Robinson Tulsa’s Abyssal Rites released their debut album Synesthesia Ritual on February 16th, 2019 on both digital through Bandcamp and on CD. This album is a pretty solid release for the guys that is, as the title of this article suggests, raw and unrelenting and a very damn good start. Since the release, the band has hit the road hard playing Oklahoma and South Dakota already and dates coming soon in Kansas and Colorado. Abyssal Rites is a five-piece unit comprised of M on vocals, A on guitars, S on guitars, E on bass, and I on drums. The band themselves has been together for a little under a year, they celebrate their official one year anniversary this coming August. It was a slow process in the beginning with members coming and going but the official writing for this piece began in October. Citing some of their chief influences as Emperor, Inquisition, Judas Iscariot, Leviathan, Mgla, Nachtmystium, and Wolves in the Throne Room, one can definitely feel them within the music. Synesthesia Ritual is not a concept album by any means, but it is about strength, overcoming weakness, the occult, death and destruction. The album is entirely self-engineered and produced by the band under their moniker Dread Cult Recordings. Since the release, the album has been released by Corpse Torture Records in the United Kingdom on cassette and Gipsy House Records in Texas on CD. It is a great release. This is one of those time machine albums that really makes me reminisce about the early days of black metal. Going song by song, there is a real raw energy that can be felt that is truly a la shades of early Darkthrone and other early names like Judas Iscariot and Nachtmystium, especially on the songs “Call of the Void” and “Given to the Altar.” So let’s get to the songs on the album, shall we? The album opens with an ambient, atmospheric piece called “Nameless Presence.” It is a 2:06 piece that is a great way to start the album. It carries a really nice set of droney synth notes that are somewhat haunting. This is something I really love in synth work. The addition of howls in random places was a really nice touch paired with the other atmospheric elements that felt as though you were within a storm that is brewing in the background. I can envision this piece opening a set. With the right lighting, it would really capture the crowd. We are then met with “Chaos Conjuration.” This is a 2:25 piece that explodes on impact. There is a real punk influence that is present here and it is really fantastic to hear. You can feel the rawness on this one for sure. Third is “Call of the Void.” This one reminds me a great deal of early Inquisition and early Tsjuder. In parts it is unrelenting and fast as hell. In other parts, it is slow and minimalistic in approach, which is something I have grown to love. This almost became my favorite song on the album. I will say it is my second. Fourth up is “Given to the Altar.” The guitar work on this song is a bit more technical and has a bit of groove in it. Coupled with I’s drumming, it is overall fantastic. This one is the second longest song on the album clocking in at 3:33, it has a real empowering vibe to it. What follows it though is my favorite on the album – “Expelled from the Pack.” This one is the longest song on the album; 4:13. It is brooding, dark song that carries with it a somewhat minimalistic approach like “Call of the Void.” It starts off slow and feels like impending doom. This song is heavy and feels like it would fit in almost any doom metal compilation album. “Sacrificial Bloodletting” visits us next. The guitar work on this piece really shined here. It reminded me a lot of early Burzum and Mayhem. It is really great. It’s when we get to “They Should Greet Me with Howls of Execration (YAITW)” when everything changes. “Greet Me” changed the entire tempo of this album. Every song up to this point was fast, carried a real raw, 90’s black metal and punk vibe. This song is great. It has a slower tempo, minimalistic yet powerful drumming and the guitars just punch you in the face. I freakin’ love this song. We are then graced with an ambient outro piece called “Synesthesia Ritual,” the title track. Tonally speaking, it is very droney. The effect on this particular one almost left me feeling paranoid for a moment, and for that fleeting moment, it was very easy to get lost in it. All in all this is great start for this band. The only complaint I have is the length of the songs. Six out of the eight songs clocked in well under four minutes, while over half of the songs clocked in less than three. I have to remind myself sometimes the timeless line “sometimes, less is more” and with this album that is exactly what is presented. There were a few song here that I wish were longer, but that also tells me that Abyssal Rites did a damned good job leaving me wanting more. Musically, I predict these guys are one-to-three songs away from writing a their masterpiece. Every song conveyed a powerful presence. Every song took me by the hand and kicked my teeth in. M’s vocal work on this album is very unique to me. His presence is there and it is great. It’s not the traditional black metal sound or style. At times I felt like I was listening to blackened punk without the clean singing. Believe me, that is not a bad thing at all. I personally love old punk rock. Production wise, this album being done in house by them, to me that is awesome. Black metal is all about that. Abyssal Rites have that formula for success down in spades. This album is raw, unrelenting, and absolutely unforgiving. I recommend this album to anyone that claims there is no good black metal in Oklahoma. You can catch Abyssal Rites in Tulsa Saturday, June 22nd at the Breaking The Bible Belt Festival at the Vanguard and at Bad Ass Renee’s on July 27th with Hersker and Black Eyed Children! HERSKER: DEATH BEFORE DISHONOR - Black Metal As It Should Be! Jun 17 2019
Written by Patrick Robinson
Hersker released their long awaited debut EP Death Before Dishonor a couple of weeks ago (May 31st, 2019 to be exact) and if you are a fan of the old school, early 90’s black metal, my friend I implore you to check out, listen to and buy this amazing piece. Hersker are a black/war metal quartet hailing from Tulsa led by Garmr on bass and vocals, Gabriel on guitars, Apophis on guitars and Raze on drums. The band has been together since March of last year and performed their first show on February 23rd this year. Upon getting together, Hersker began work on the EPs opening song “Unholy Onslaught” almost immediately and shortly after “Blood of Swine” and three other not yet releases, which again can be heard on their live set. Daniel Shields produced Death Before Dishonor in his home studio. This guy did a beautiful job on the production. Death Before Dishonor is an absolute powerful piece of music that is truly one of the best metal releases of 2019, in my personal opinion. When I listen to this great piece of music, I am quickly transported back to the early days of second wave black metal that was dominated by bands like Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Immortal, and Emperor. Hersker would have most certainly fit into that crop right away. You can truly feel their other noteworthy influences Marduk, Tsjuder, and Immortal within this EP. It’s what makes this EP so fantastic. Again, there is such a deep amount of love and respect for the genre truly showcased here. Lyrically, the songs were written by Raze with Garmr’s influence added in. Each of these songs deals with war. Each are their own battle completely unrelated to one another and from different perspectives. This is seen even in the album art designed by Conqueror Ink. Even the name Hersker, when it is translated to English from Danish means ruler. Every little thing within this project is done with a truly defining and strategic purpose. You can truly feel that a tremendous amount of patience and love went into this piece, a practice mostly seen in more seasoned artists. Hersker truly is a professional project that should be taken very seriously and one listen to this EP and you will truly understand. So with that, let’s go song by song. The EP opens with the song “Unholy Onslaught” I felt a strong Marduk and Tsjuder influence here. I would venture to say that Tsjuder’s early releases were the key influence on this piece, especially their debut album Desert Northern Hell. The Marduk influence comes in when we get to about two minutes in. You can truly feel the love for Marduk’s early material here. The intensity of this song can be felt for miles. The guitar work is incredible. It brings a feeling of dread, almost like you know that something is coming. I love that A LOT. When those leads kick in at the 0:14 mark, it just adds so much depth to what is already shaping up to being something beautiful. You can feel the energy being built up. Raze’s drumming is simply masterful. He did a remarkable job adding to the build, especially at the 4:45 mark. The drums from this point to the end of the song were just beautiful. “Blood of Swine” is the second song on the EP. It opens with blast beat drumming and intense guitars that are followed close with a short near blood-curdling scream from Garmr. This song is unrelenting and unmerciful. We hear lyrics of being taken to paradise after the war, cleansing the world with the blood of swine, and very war driven themes. This song really showcases Garmr’s vocal ability. His range is so versatile. Being able to hit very high with the screams, maintaining a very nice mid range for the verses and occasionally hitting lows that could rival any death metal vocalist. I definitely feel a lot of Panzerfaust days Darkthrone here, especially with the guitar playing and the intense blast beat drumming. There is a tremendous amount of Immortal influences here, which really made me happy. I listened to the EP with my guitarist Ben a couple of weeks ago and began dissecting it damn near by the single chords and picked up a hint of Immolation influence in certain parts which made me love this song even more. “Ride to Death” closes the EP. It is a beautiful piece. It opens with guitar work that feel inspired by Belphegor. We can still feel the Marduk and Tsjuder influence here. This song feels very Norse to me when I listen to the words. The guitars and bass are exceptional here and when paired with the drums, you can tell that there was a bit more time spent on this one than the others. It’s truly incredible and a wonderful way to close out the EP. At the 3:24 mark, we are greeted by a really beautiful chorus effect on the guitars clean setting. It then brings us to the finale, which, when I first heard it on the EP, I was almost brought to tears literally. If you are in the Tulsa area on June 22nd, head over to the Vanguard to see them at the “Breaking the Bible Belt” festival. These guys are incredible to see live! After that, they are on stage again at Bad Ass Renee’s on July 27th headlining with Abyssal Rites, Black Eyed Children and Koningsor. Both of these shows will be awesome so if you’re in the area, be sure to check them out! And also be sure to get Death Before Dishonor on the band’s Bandcamp page! Outside The Shadows: Division. Apr 14 2019
Written by Will Harrison
Outside The Shadows: Division is a killer six track album that just became available on Friday April 11th, so I had to get me a copy of this most excellent Montague of hard rock. I have to say, listening to this brought back a lot of memories from to late 90s to the early 2000s, just because OTS band’s sound is very reminiscent of those times and sounds coming from the bands of that time period. For instance, Alter Bridge, Audioslave, Linkin Park and from the Christian circuit Twelve Stones, Evanescence and from the 80s, Rage of Angels, but not as melodic vocally. Based on the album title I know some of you might be worried that this is a trick to get you to work on your math a bit, but don’t worry, it’s quite the opposite, LOL, Division is more about a state of mind - separation of God and man, separation from family or perhaps when good friends have disagreements or differences that cause breakups? I really enjoyed all of the tracks on this album, but one really sticks out to me, track four, Surrender - Very deep and full of heart and who doesn’t love a good moving-heartfelt-acoustic rock song? Doesn’t matter, your argument is invalid! P.S. I really dig the album’s cover art it’s awesome, try to change my mind! It’s impossible. Go out and get a copy of this album! It can be found on all these wonderful sites: www.itunes.com , www.spotify.com, www.deezer.com, www.googleplay.com, www.amazon.com and www.bandcamp.com Also check out their website: www.outsidetheshadows.com |
Solarist: Slave. A New Favorite! Mar 2 2019
Written by Will Harrison
Solarist: Slave - is a 12 track EP featuring some great alternative rock from all the way out in Greenville, South Carolina. The guys sent me a copy of their EP a while back and I’m just now getting to write a review on it. I’m sorry for the late review however I do have a ton of music that comes in and it’s not always easy to get to them as fast as I want. Back to the music: I have to say I really enjoyed this album, it’s definitely falls under one of my favorite genres of music. It has a sound reminiscent of 90s alternative rock. The vocals are killer, reminds me of the original vocalist of Oklahoma’s own Hinder, very dark and gritty but still clear enough to understand and relate with. The guitar riffs remind me of Twelve Stones and even Creed or Alter Bridge. The music in this album has a lot of heart and it’s relatable. Who hasn’t gone though some rough times in their life? I mean I may not be a traveling musician but my heart connects with the lyrics and music, just saying. They guys also sent me an extra LP, Solarist: Illustrate, it features three acoustic bonus tracks – The track Bleed features Jacob Porter. I dig the acoustic stylings of Solarist! For more info on the band Solarist check them out on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Reverbnation and Soundcloud! |
Kindom of Ashes: Space Alien/New Nebraska. Jan 23 2019
Written by Will Harrison
Kindom of Ashes: just came out with their first single, they sent me a copy to review and it's awesome, It's a freaking trip! I was thinking Jazz Fusion mixed with Speed Metal when I heard it, but maybe that’s not it at all. It’s honestly hard to say because I’ve never really heard anything quite like it. It comes in and just hits you like a ton of bricks, with its killer and perfectly mixed guitar riffs by Ron Ramsey and Micah Smith and also the dangerous basslines by Jorge Castillo, add to that the stellar drums by TJ Masters and you have an amazing ensemble of local metal Gods. I’m not sure which Gods to compare them to, but just know they are not holding back! It comes in hard and finishes smooth, better wear a helmet otherwise your face might just melt off from the intensity! It’s kind of like walking into a crowded bar fight, you just don’t know what you’re going to get hit with? There’s even some Ska thrown in it but it sounds amaze-balls! Go and check it out for yourself! It's available on - Spotify, iTunes, Google Play, Deezer and Youtube! |
MONTU: PHASES Nov 6 2018
Written by Siege Powell
I was first introduced to Montu about two and a half years ago. I was out with some coworkers and friends at Fassler Hall in Okahoma City and like most people who first walk into a bar, I completely disregarded that there was live music in search of the people I was meeting. However, shortly after sitting down with my first drink I overheard some recognizable video game themes being played on the synthesizer in between songs and my nerdy ass got excited. So, while waiting for the rest of my party to arrive I turned my attention to the music and was completely blown away. Never have I ever just instantly loved a band the way I love Montu, they pulled me in and kept me entranced with their music for the entire time they were on stage. I eventually got everyone at my table dancing with me to these guys. I will state here that I have an affinity for jam bands, and Montu is the epitome of talent in a band that does nothing but produce excellent music over and over again. Anyway, back to my little story we were hit by a torrential downpour probably about half-way into their set and so I didn’t get my fill that night, but I approached the band about reviewing them after they got off stage and they handed me a CD and I took it home and it has been constantly playing ever since then. I’ve been itching to hear a new album from them for a while now and Phases certainly delivers in both talent and idiosyncrasy. The first song “Skull Shaker” starts with synth and bass and enters guitar and melody shortly thereafter; it has a sweeping rhythm that tosses the melody back and forth between synth and guitar, heavy breakdowns and just an overall jamtastic sound make this an excellent opener for their new album. Track 2 “Phases” is obviously the title track for the album, it provides a mellow rhythm and low, slow, trippy synth that give off excellent vibes, it personally gives me the feeling of riding the clouds above a city nightscape. Track 3 “Nightfall” features a climbing twisting guitar and bass effect, set to a funky rhythm that make this writer just want to get up next to the stage and dance, as it progresses and ends you can hear the piano, synth, and bass all create a dusky feeling as though you can almost feel the sea air on your face at dusk on some boardwalk out there in the world. This song is a fantastic example of just how talented this local group is, they’re unmatched in my book and have definitely made it into my top 3 favorite local groups for sure. The next track (4) “The Implication” starts with rhythm and saxophone, it’s got a sexy, groovy feeling to it, a hip shaker and a hand clapper for sure…I honestly can’t wait to hear them play this one live, it’s funky and it’s beautiful. Number 5 on the album is a song called “Liasons” and it starts dreamy and quickly progresses into what I’d call baby making music, it’s got a fair amount of synth and ambience to it with a bit of a relaxed night time feel but still has that weaving melody I’ve grown to love from these guys. This one gave me the chills…twice, just excellent. Finally, the album ends with song six “Drift” which was recorded live. It features keyboard, ambience, and a guitar melody that seems to tell a happy story, it has a lighter airier sound to it, and if I could describe it as anything I’d say it’s that long happy sigh you have after a great night out with people you really care about. I absolutely love Montu, and I hope after reading this you’ll go check them out. They’ve got pages on all social media platforms, follow them on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for updates, new music, tour dates, and more! Be sure to go see them when they’re playing in a town near you, they’re a live experience that just can’t be beat! Phases is available now on Spotify, iTunes, Bandcamp, and Apple Music, be sure to buy your copy today and support these incredibly talented local artists! |
Clutch: Book of Bad Decisions. Oct 16 2018
Written by Will Harrison
Clutch’s album, Book of Bad Decisions is a delight in many ways! To see such amazing arrangement of music from a band that’s been around for quite some time is always grand, but to see new arrangements, that don’t take away from older material is even more amazing. Clutch has definitely achieved this often hard to achieve status. I am impressed to say the least. I’ve seen many bands fall astray from quality and authentic integrity as they get some age on them, heck many bands can hardly come out of their one hit wonder status – even if they ‘re with a major label. Clutch has always had a soulful vibe to their music, even when they were going for heavier sound - They still have that strong soulful feel along with some Blues Fusion, masked with old school Rock and Roll. My favorite tracks would be: A Good Fire, Ghoul Wrangler, Sonic Counselor and Vision Quest - Mostly for the consistent vibe throughout; It’s fun, It’s modern, It’s authentic to the band and still relevant. Hot Bottom Feeder is a thrill ride, that you don’t want to stop even after he song is finished. Title track, Book of bad decisions – is authentic to the band and very heartfelt, through the lyrics and arrangements, you can feel the heartache, mistakes and rise back to the top. The Book of bad decisions is a solid album, great recording, great lyrics and a soulful Rock triumph! |
Broken Testimony: Holding On To Nothing. Sept 28 2018
Written by Will Harrison
Broken Testimony: Holding On To Nothing - is a solid hit! Lyrically it’s smooth and haunting at the same time, I say that because it opens up a lot of emotions when listening to it; If you’ve ever lost someone close or something special, had to move on and grow from it then you will relate with this album. This album is deeper than just an Alternative Rock album, It’s an anthology of pain, loss and growth. The intros are haunting and creepy, all the while leading you into great music progressions. It digs and digs at my heart and doesn't let go. I found myself getting lost in a sea of emotions, which says how moving this album really is. My favorite tracks were: Control, Fade Away, Medusa and Vitality – Because once again Haunting and smooth. The vocalist, Judge Page is amazing, just the right amount of passion and emotion. The guitarist, drummer and bassist play magically and grind at all the right times. I can’t find a negative to say about this album. Trust me that says a lot! Check it out for yourself at: www.thermalent.com Itunes and Google Play. |
Gentry Counce: Build With A Brick. Sept 8 2018
Written by Siege Powell
Picture if you will a scene: It’s mid-August in the southern state of your choice, the heat of the sun as it sets behind the tree line burns the back of your shoulders and you’ve got a cold beer in your hands. The cicadas are screaming and you’re dancing with your honey to some sweet, hip-shaking, soul rattling blues music near an outdoor stage as the fireflies float lazily in to join you. That’s exactly how Gentry Counce’s new blues album “Build with a Brick” made me feel when I gave it a listen. It takes me back to my roots in music, as I’ve always been a pretty big blues fan, and brings with it some real soul and emotion that any music fan could enjoy. Right from the get-go this album piques this music fan’s interest as the first song “Every Man” starts with some twangy guitar sounds that make the listener want to get up and dance, reminiscent of Little Feat, and with clever lyrics this song is a great start to a great EP. The second song “Down & Dirty” has more of a sultry, bluesy, and cool sound to it; powerful emotions and intense vocals mixed with an added organ part offer a nice transition into a classic blues sound. With vocals that sound like Stevie Nicks meets Dana Fuchs this song definitely has the grit and passion blues fans look for in a female singer, certainly an enjoyable song. Up next is a song called “Hard Love” that continues with the sultry sound, but adds in a sexy “Black Velvet”-esque rhythm that you can’t help but swing your hips to as Gentry sings her gritty siren song of summer. After this piece is a fourth song called “Good Girl” starts with an acoustic sound and then transitions into a song that has a sound Stevie Ray Vaughn would be proud of, with a smoother blues sound this song changes up the EP and offers great blues sound and a guitar breakdown that screams and sends shivers down your whole body. The fifth and final song “Ain’t Your Bitch” is a defiant and seedy song, with another great hip-shaking rhythm and creeping guitar parts this song puts a warm, definitive, and strong stamp on the end of this EP. Overall, I sincerely enjoyed the album, it took me back to my youth when I would go to blues festivals with my mother and sell pottery and ceramics. The musical talent on this album was something I didn’t expect going into it, blues isn’t the easiest sound to make sound so good. If you’re a fan of blues, or even if you’re not, I highly suggest you check out Gentry’s new EP. The release date isn’t set in stone yet, so I can’t offer you that, but I can tell you to go like her Facebook Group page for updates so that when it does come out you can get your hands on it first thing. Gentry plays a lot of shows locally so keep and eye out and make sure to catch her the next time she’s playing live, you definitely won’t regret it! |
Beneath The Fallen: No Pitty For Self Infliction. July 3 2018
Written by Siege Powell
Have you ever heard an album that you could relate to on such a level that it was almost scary? Recently I discovered a group that, while not local to OKC, is making a big splash in their local area of Austin, Texas and I decided to give their new EP, No Pity for Self-Infliction, a listen just before its release. This EP is insanely relatable for myself and I’m sure lots of other music fans, who have experienced an abusive relationship or two in the past. Beneath the Fallen formed sometime in 2005 in upstate New York, it is the result of the minds of brothers Frank and Justin Williams, and while the band had periodic success with their songs, opening for acts such as Fuel, Pearl, Tantric and others, they took an eight-year hiatus that they just returned from in early 2017. Resurrected, they have now added frontwoman Kraevin Caedo’s siren-like vocals and truly come back full force. Their new EP contains some of the bands best music to date, fueled by both passion and pure talent, this group is on the move in a hurry. The EP opens with a song called Bad News, it has a heavy sound and sharp guitar riffs that give the sense of passion that is felt throughout the entire album. The song contains a melodic breakdown during the chorus and a super heavy breakdown around the 2:50 mark with male vocalist (and guitar wizard) Frank Williams’ intense growls. Overall a great sounding opening track which leads well into the second song, Don’t Let Go, which hosts sharp guitar tweaks and riffs, poetic lyrics, and a swirling beautiful chorus. This is a song you can truly feel in your chest. The third song is my personal favorite off of the EP, titled Bleed this song combines heavy drum beats, a dancing spiraling guitar sound, and a contrasted and harmonized balance betwixt both male and female vocals that sends chills down the listeners spine. The fourth song, also features a full lengthmusic video you can find on YouTube (https://youtu.be/LmuSX-trUiA), and it’s a powerful song about domestic abuse, featuring beautiful harmonies, the video deserves credit for offering domestic abuse statistics at the end and ways for people in those situations to seek help. Definitely proud of the band for tackling such a tough subject with such a beautiful song. The fifth song, Sever the Line, is a slower, quieter, song with haunting melodies and beautiful lyrics about finally leaving an abusive relationship, a nice follow up to the intensity of the song before it for sure. The sixth and final song, If You Could See Me Now, begins with strong male vocals that lead into beautiful vocals sung by Kraevin, with sincere lyrics and strong powerful riffs and rhythms this is a strong closing to an intensely emotional EP by this talented group. If you’re looking for something heavy and incredibly emotional you can look to this EP for your July listening pleasure. It’s definitely made it’s way onto a few playlists of mine. It’s available now worldwide, you can find it on Spotify, iTunes, and Amazon music. To hear more from Beneath the Fallen, check them out on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Patreon. Black Eyed Children: Eternal Black Within the Void June 18 2018
Written by Siege Powell
Have you ever listened to something that just absolutely melted your face off as it took you on a mythical ride through the darkness? Well, if you haven’t then have I got the album for you! Local black/thrash metal group Black Eyed Children released today (June 12th, 2018) a magnificent EP called Eternal Black Within the Void. I’ll admit when front man and bassist Patrick Robinson let me have a sneak peak I was not prepared for what I experienced listening to this album. I’ve had to give it several listens to truly familiarize myself with all aspects of this multi-layered work of art. This album is the last of Robinson’s solo material, their debut album “Until the Void Consumes Us” was also made using his talent alone. There is an appearance by Ben Stire (Hyperborean Skies) on keyboard for the fourth song “Eternal Black” which is really a treat for your ears and a great addition to the album overall. The album begins with the song “Vortex to the Void” which is suspiciously ambient, it lulls the listener into a trance-like state by its completion and leaves your ears unsuspecting of what’s to come next. The second compilation on this EP is called “All Hail the Void” and I’m not going to lie…it kind of melted my face off when it started as I was not expecting something quite so…intense when the first song ended. This song is shorter than the two that follow which are 8-minute thrash ballads but they all tell of an epoch betwixt a world of darkness and the return of who I suspect are massive molten gods. The first two minutes of “All Hail the Void” are hard, fast, and heavier than a black hole, it then alternates between fast and heavy and rhythmic and groovy until about 5:13 where is turns into a dreamy guitar solo which finishes out the song and leads you into the next part of the story “When the Old Gods Return.” The third installation to this insanely heavy story has a sound I could only describe as doom at its start with drums and weighty guitar riffs. Double bass starts about thirty seconds in and it sounds like a damn helicopter, Robinson must have calves of steel. The song continues with the theme of heavy, fast, thrash metal, but also includes the feeling of doom as you can envision storm clouds parting for the revelation of massive old world gods striding slowly towards you. Robinson’s unique vocals also offer a nice touch to this song as they play over the fast heavy instrumentals which break for a cacophonous series of drums and cymbals near the end of the song which ends using a rhythm breakdown to fade out. “Eternal Black” is probably my favorite piece from this EP, though the entire thing is great (especially if you’re like me and not super familiar with this kind of metal…I greatly enjoyed the story it told and the talent involved in it’s creation), it opens with fast riffs and double bass but is sliced by slow cymbals that give it a strong feeling of anticipation for when then song kicks into overdrive a little over a minute in. More great vocals from Robinson and a god-like ambience begins in the background followed by several minutes of great instrumentals and the introduction of organ (Stire on keyboard) music after a breakdown at the seven and half minute mark, it finishes out as heavy as the second song started and leads one to believe that this song was a story of the wrath of the gods. Overall it was a great journey, and the album is jam packed with a lot of talent considering it was almost solely created by Robinson alone. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to hear a musical epoch that is as intense as it is enjoyable to listen to. To hear more from Black Eyed Children and keep up with updates on future shows/projects/albums, or to check out this EP and its prior album, find them on Facebook and Instagram and give them a like/follow! Let’s continue to support our local music scene OKC! |
Cosmic Wool: A Psychedelic Sound Orgasm June 10 2018
Written by Siege Powell
It’s no secret that the brothers Romo are a talented duo from Oklahoma. Nevada and Rado, formerly of Anti-Mortem, and currently of Texas Hippie Coalition, are definitely well known in Oklahoma’s music scene. What you may not know however, is that they have their own funky, groovy, super talented band called Cosmic Wool with their friends, guitarist Drew Williams and drummer Thomas Frizzell, that will absolutely blow your mind. This ingenious quartet released their first self-titled album last December and let me tell you, this album does NOT disappoint! From the first song (which was previously a single) Hole for My Head you can tell the band has put their soul into this endeavor. Front man Rado Romo strays from his former metal growls and sets the mood with more melodic and definitively passionate approach to this bands fun, funky, psychedelic sound. My personal favorite from this album is Moonstone, it’s a seductive, swaying, serenade full of passion that will have you singing along and grinding your hips to the rhythm. Another tune I greatly enjoy is I Met a Girl, which will have you dancing around with it’s funky bass licks and bouncy guitar sound. While What I’ve Been Up to All Alone is a song that will have you feeling singer Rado’s emotions, with a unique and plucky bass line, relatable lyrics, and a psychedelic 70s feel to it, this one is easily another favorite. And personally, I thought a song with a hashtag in the title wouldn’t be my thing, but #Lonely has such catchy lyrics and fantastic sound you’ll find yourself singing it randomly long after you’ve turned your radio off and walked away. The album in total has eight wonderful tracks and it’s a total eargasm to listen to, trust me. In fact, it’s an understatement to say my ears were pleased when listening to this album, they were pleasured. To be honest I listen to it multiple times a week because that’s just how good it feels to hear what these guys have made. If you’re looking for a new band to follow and be excited about, get behind Cosmic Wool! And if you’re looking for an excellent live show you’re in luck, their live shows are as lively, energetic, and fun as their new album! Yes, it’s fair to say, I cannot wait to hear more from this group in the future. Eight tracks are just barely enough to keep me occupied while they make more magic. Cosmic Wool has multiple shows coming up this summer, check them out on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for upcoming show dates and new music! |
PET: Burning For More June 4 2018
Written by Siege Powell
When it comes to bands, I often search for groups that strike up something within my soul, who hit the right notes and play the right rhythms that make it impossible for me to not get up and move, and OKC’s own local talent PET certainly has what I’m looking for in that regard. Though they’ve only got one single currently out, it’s enough to make you want to go seek these guys out live just to hear what else they’ve got in their musical arsenal, plus they play so passionately you know the live show is bound to be soul shaking. "Burning" is their current single that you can find on Spotify and from the first time I heard it I was hooked on this group. Composed of three talented members, Judd Carson on guitar/lead vocals, Keith Royalty on bass, and Cameron Glenn on drums, this group could definitely be going places if they keep putting out songs like Burning in the future. The song starts with low riffs and is joined by a piercing spine twisting riff a few seconds in that really excites the listeners ears, along with a low swinging rhythm kept by the bass/drums, an intense breakdown near the end, and passionate lyrics by a talented vocalist this song is reminiscent, to me, of those old recordings you hear of legends like Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, or even Tool circa Opiate. But that’s not to say these guys are old hat, their sound definitely has a modern air to it that could bring this style of rock back into the 21st century, which I for one would gladly welcome. The single is so good, it’s been on my favorites playlist for the past several weeks, I find myself getting excited every time I hear it, I am definitely eager to hear more from PET. Perhaps with enough cheering we could get an EP from these guys sometime in the near future? Here’s hoping. 😉 |
Dresden Bombers: Dance Music For Sad People May 17 2018
Written by Will Harrison
The title of the album sounds like it was written by Scott Pilgrim, LOL, not a bad thing - I love that movie! However the EP is refreshing and it sent me into happy thoughts, and that my friends is pretty rare. Norman’s own Dresden Bombers contacted me and asked if I would check out their upcoming EP and I was happy to oblige. The EP consist of four tracks, solidly recorded I have to say; it’s a quick listen but I’m sure you’ll want to put it on repeat and listen over and over. I found the Dresden Bombers to have a sound reminiscent of The Killers, which is fine by me because that’s one of my favorite national bands! The recording is solid and leveled out perfectly – to put that in laymans terms, it was good quality and neither the instruments nor the vocals overlapped each other. I have to give credit where credit is due – The EP was recorded by the one and only Brian Eads at his home studio in Norman Oklahoma. The EP will be available on May 19th on Itunes, CD Baby, and Spotify! So go out there, download and support your local musicians! |
Deathbox: Deathbox Apr 21 2018
Written by Will Harrison
Hey Local Metal heads! Deathbox has just released their title EP on Reverbnation and its killer! I’m really digging their sound; they’ve come a long way since their first time playing at Your Mom’s Place. we’ve worked with them on several projects and they always come through. The EP is stellar, everything you would want from a death metal album, from the well balanced guitars and hard-hitting drums to the grungy Growling vocals. The EP hits really deep in all the right ways. Much respect and I could definitely grind to these tracks. Very hardcore. The EP features five tracks: Unkind, All Forgotten, Feast, Cursed and Something Wicked. My favorite would have to be Feast, it has a great starting point and builds from there. It’s like a horror film on wheels! Engineered and Mixed by Miguel Reiner of Black Island Productions If you haven’t checked it out yet, then you better get on with that! I give it big thumbs up and raise my fists for Deathbox! |
Review - Final Drive: Dig Deeper Feb 21 2018
Written by Will Harrison
If you love Heavy Metal music, Final Drive’s “Dig Deeper” is sure to set the mood for you! I would put this band’s sound somewhere in between Southern groove and Thrash Metal, and they have described themselves as this as well. It’s a solid recording, mixed very well, clean and balanced; all the way from the growling vocals of front-man Jorden Gaw, to the stellar guitar skills of Nathan Easter, it’s a killer mix! I’m A fan of metal and a friend of the band so I’m probably a little biased, but don’t let that stop you from picking up this album! It’s a great album, with a sound all its own. My favorite tracks are: The last Time, Life Decided, Follow The Curse and my all-time favorite of theirs - Want It all! Go out and pick it up today, be a good friend and pick up a copy for your bestie! This album is available on: Bandcamp, Soundcloud, Reverbnation, itunes, Spotify and you can follow them on Facebook. Mojo Thief Feb 13 2018
Written by Will Harrison
Mojo Thief’s new self-titled E.P, is a perfect fit for your Valentine’s celebrations, sure to set the mood just right; And that’s no joke. I would put this band’s sound somewhere in between Soft Rock and Southern Rock. It’s a solid recording, mixed very well, clean and balanced with no feedback or background mess. Honestly I can’t say that about some local Indie music. Don’t worry, I won’t point any fingers! Also the vocals are beautiful. I’m not much of a country fan but somehow this band gets away with a lot, even though there’s a few country licks in there. I guess I’ll have to let it slide this time, LOL. I was serious about the Valentine’s celebrating, so if you got plans with your lady or fella or both, then put this E.P on. You won’t regret it. This E.P is available on: Bandcamp, Soundcloud, Reverbnation and Noise Trade; soon to be on Spotify, Apple Music and Google Play! Give them a like on Facebook and here's Mojo Thief’s Bandcamp link: https://mojothief.bandcamp.com/album/mojo-thief-e-p |
Review - Candyass Execution Feb 5 2018
Written by Will Harrison
Candyass Execution, is a triumph in non-conventional music, A stretch of the imagination, and a push for the unexpected. Never have I heard an album like this to say the least, but to me that's a good thing! It means that music is not dead and still original. It means there’s hope for future electronic musicians. Personally I like being surprised when I hear new recordings. It makes me what to listen to a whole album versus just the chosen few title tracks. This album has nine tracks. Each track is cohesive to the other tracks and still unique as each separate track; this music is not what you would typically would hear on the radio, but instead maybe in the background of a TV series or sound score of a film? I like that it’s unique in its nature, because it could be used in many faucets or mediums. My favorite tracks would have to be: No Sign of Rain, It Looks back, Mocking The Cradle and So We Answer – just because the sound is diverse and the titles are great. You better give this one a listen for yourself, I know you will enjoy it! Check it out Candyass Execution onFacebook! Also the musician Allin KHG is a photographer and creator of creepy looking toys, that you have to see for yourself! Check out his website: http://empallin.wixsite.com/khg-interserv |
Review - The Hormones Nov 28 2017
Written by Will Harrison
The Hormones: Legendary Junk - is a solid album with the best of the past and present songs in the career of this Punk band from Austin Texas! (1994 – 2017) to be exact. It’s a non-stop joy ride of the Punk era! It’s epic proportions of creativity and style can’t be matched by any of this, modern hoppy choppy mainstream punk music. It has lot of things that modern musicians don’t seem to grasp and that’s heart, passion and longevity. Even the cover art is epic, very reminiscent of The Ramones album art. I have copies of both the CD and Vinyl, that I received from front-man, Tim Stegall when they performed in OKC at The Drunken Fry; the vinyl really looks great framed on my wall – it’s probably my favorite one in my vinyl collection, next to The Beatles: Abby Road! I’ve seen a bunch of punk bands and heard a ton of punk albums and this is one that I can highly recommend! So give it a try! You can contact them on Facebook and buy a copy on Reverbnation – https://www.reverbnation.com/timnapalm |
Review - Brain in The Sky Aug 6 2017
Written by Will Harrison
Brain in the Sky, just came out with a self-titled LP and it’s great! These these guys are local and they know how to put on a fun show! I watched them recently at Your Mom’s Place in OKC, they have a fun surfer punk sound, the guys are very talented and fun to talk to. The recording is well done, very balanced levels - Overall a quality recording. One of the best home recordings I personally have heard. That goes a long way, because I’ve heard some crappy ones! There are some interesting titles to the tracks on this one like: Communities, Swollen, Radical Republican, Portal to Yahweh, Strange Things, and Ann the Man. With that being said, you should check this one out because of the titles, even if you’re not into good music. Check out these guys in concert, give them a like on Facebook and download a copy of Brain In The Sky at https://braininthesky.bandcamp.com/album/brain-in-the-sky Support local music always! |
Review/Interview: Left To Die June 7 2017
Written by Will Harrison
Left To Die’s new album Dead Technology is to die for! Stepping away from their traditional metal style, and have progressed to something different. I'm actually digging the new vibe myself, their Blues/Funk/ meshed with grunge vocals is killer. I asked vocalist/writer, Jeremy Waller why they decided to go with a different style than what their fans are used to? Jeremy replied “we're just pushing ourselves as musicians and we don't want to be predictable. predictable = boring to us”. I also asked him to give us a little inside info about the album. Jeremy said, “every song on Dead Technology is an autobiography of sorts. Watch-list, is about the time the FBI came to my house because of something I posted on Facebook. Held Captive, is about a loved one that always runs away whenever things get tough. Immune, is about not letting people hurt you. Which had become a very personal thing for me.” I also asked Jeremy to clue us in on some future plans for Left To Die. He said “ we will be opening for Hell Yeah August 18th at the Diamond Ballroom in OKC! We have a few out of town shows coming up and until then we are just working.” “We're going to be producing a music video here soon with our video guru, Dave French from Dallas, he did our videos from Trust and he did an amazing job.” Well you heard it all here first - because the album doesn't come out until June 10th for physical copies and the full digital release June 15th. |
Review - They Act Human May 9 2017
Written by Will Harrison
They Act Human is not for the faint of heart, it’s a new direction in music and perhaps the mind? When listening to tracks from They act Human, you might be reminded of of yester year’s sounds. However, you won’t be able to nail it down to any particular genre or style. Because what you’re really feeling is nostalgia mixed with the drive to be different. Why is that? It’s because when creator, Art Sunday produced his tracks/music, he wasn’t trying to mimic other bands or be a certain genre, he was simply being unique. If you’ve met Art or attended his yearly event, Underground Monster Carnival, then you know exactly what I’m talking about. He’s in a league all his own. When asked about The project - Art put it this way, imagine several robots got together, they formed a band and they communicate through music in an effort to be human – that is the premise of They Act Human. In my opinion, They Act Human is a fun ride of melodic beats, sounds and electronic mayhem. It’s like being on a Ferris wheel, the tilt a whirl and being at the circus all at the same time. Every track that I’ve heard is fun, bouncy, bright and all its own. There’s really no lyrics so it’s safe for your little ones to listen too, I know my children Digit! (see what I did there? LOL). I won’t compare it to anything else, because I believe that’s the point. Go check it out yourself, you won’t be disappointed. Follow They Act Human on Facebook, Twitter and check out the website - http://www.theyacthuman.com |
Review - From A Broken Oath:Till Death Do Us part. Apr 23 2017
Written by Will Harrison
Recently, the local rock band From A Broken Oath was having a contest on Facebook – it was said, if you share their page, along with posting your email, you get a free download of “Till Death Do Us part” from their self-titled album. I was stoked, so I shared the site, posted and received the download via email and very quickly I might add! I enjoyed it, it had good flow to it. It’s a good solid recording and structured well. It brought me back to the late nineties when Alternative rock and Metal was crossing over - You know alternative rock vocals with metal music; I have always like these types of bands, so this is great to me. Good clean vocals with heavy distortion, yeah that’s my vibe and I’m not afraid to say it. I’ve had the pleasure of hearing these guys live and it was an energetic performance. They’re very talented musicians to say the least. I highly recommend you check them out at their next show. Anyway, you give it a try yourself, Check them out on Facebook and other social media sites. |
Montreal's Closer To Found: Will Be Rocking The Railhead. Apr 5 2017
Written by Will Harrison
Montreal’s own Closer to Found will be rocking the house in Lawton, Oklahoma at the one and only Railhead Saloon on April 21rst! So get ready for a rocking good time. I was contacted by their publicist for an interview with the band’s vocalist Lawrence Leylekian. We love supporting music from all over, so we were down for the exclusive. So here it is. Enjoy this interview, and then come out to the Railhead in Lawton to see this up and coming band. Will: First of all, tell us what your band has been up to lately. LL: Following the release of our debut album this past November, we've been busy preparing for our upcoming tour, as well as putting together shows for our hometown fans in Montreal and nearby Ottawa. We've also recently released a new music video for "Listen Close and You Hear The Ocean" which is the first track off our debut album 'Always Just As Lost'. Will: What is music to you? LL: On a personal level, music to me is a creative outlet that allows me to explore my perspective of many topics of interest. Diving into subjects such as socio-political issues in one song and then moving on to the complications of romance in the next could easily cause any listener to feel lost in the disparity of topics, however, when you put those same topics through the filter of a singular perspective (or in the case of many bands a collective perspective) you create a common ground with which all listeners can connect. Will: What do believe your music, is to others? LL: In many ways our music gives our listeners a feeling of realness in the sense that we don't try to dilute ourselves by being overly complicated with our music. Rather, we like to let the beauty in simplicity shine through and let things come naturally. We have a lot of fun with our music and that translates to the listener. Will: What are your future plans? |
LL: This summer we will begin recording our sophomore album as well as work on a few other smaller projects we have planned for the fall months. Will: What is your band’s process when making music? LL: The process begins in the studio where I'll begin by creating what eventually becomes the musical skeleton of our songs. After that the lyrical process becomes more of a collaborative effort between Zack and I. From there the finishing touches are added to the songs throughout the recording process to truly create a polished product. Will: What has been your experience in working with The OKC Edge? LL: It's been great; it's always a fun experience working with people who carry a true passion for the music they represent. On another note, I also really enjoy your twitter account, whoever takes care of that is doing a great job at it. Will: Tell us about your most recent album – how was that creating experience? LL: The process of putting together our first album 'Always Just As Lost' was a lot of fun for us. Coming out of that process left us in a bit of a state of withdrawal until we caught a glimpse of what lay ahead of us. Now all we can say is that we're eager to begin that process and see once again what our efforts yield. Will: Where can we follow you online? Review - A Bad Think: The Tragic End of A Dreamer Mar 31 2017
Written by Will Harrison
A Bad Think: The Tragic End of A Dreamer, has an intense title but not an intense feel when listening to the album. If anything, It’s quite the opposite, I found it to be relaxing in fact. This fourteen tack CD has a nice Blues/Jazz Rock feel. The album was recorded well, all the right levels and it was mixed down professionally. The vocals and guitar are just right, no overdoing it. No Way Out, My Universe and The animal are my favorite tracks. They have a good steady rise and vibe. I can’t really compare this to any particular band or bands, other than the openings on a few songs seem reminiscent of The Beatles acid days. If you’re a real fan then you’ll know what I’m talking about. With that being said, it’s a good album overall. I can’t say anything bad about it – other than the title of the album being more extreme than the music itself. However, you should give it a listen and form your own opinion. Review - Scattered Hamlet: Swamp Rebel Machine. Nov 26 2016
Written by Will Harrison
Scattered Hamlet’s new album Swamp Rebel Machine is a smash hit! Are you a fan of Country and Metal? Scattered Hamlet is the sound culmination of your two favorite genres. Swamp Rebel Machine contains eleven tracks of Hillbilly Metal and non-stop attitude. This album is produced and mixed by Jason Donaghy and Jake Rodenhouse at Buck Moon Productions. Howie Weinberg mastered it. I’ve honestly never heard anything quite like this; they have an unusual one-of-a-kind sound and style – a genre all their own. It’s apparent that this talented band has worked hard to put together a well-balanced album. I’m really digging the vibe of this album as well as the artwork - in fact, I received an awesome sticker inside my copy with great artwork to boot. It is a great recording, one that I highly recommend. These guys are a real treat in concert as well – if you get the chance to check them out live, you won’t regret it. Review - My Witch My Blood. Nov 4 2016
Written by Will Harrison
My Witch My Blood is a new EP that was written recorded by local talent Joshua Kidd. His previous works were with local bands Kali Ra andThe Choke. Both bands were under the Goth Rock genre. I had the opportunity of hearing him in both past bands, and have always been impressed with his style and talent. He is entertaining both on stage and just in conversation. We will be doing an interview with him in the near future so be sure and watch for that. His new project is amazing in many ways - composition, emotion and overall sound. His voice carries through a lot stronger than his previous works – and I mean that in a good way! He has really come into his own. His lyrics have always been deep and dark, but with this album I feel the emotion more. It’s raw and straight forward, and I like that. I would put the current ep under the Industrial genre. He is working on a full length album as well. He said it will be more instrument driven, so less electronic. Either way, I believe it will be phenomenal! Check out My Witch My Blood on www.spotify.com and www.itunes.com |
Review - Munkie Gunn: Local Rockers. Sept 1 2016
Written by Will Harrison
Munkie Gunn is a local metal band that has been involved in the scene for many years. They are a good group of guys that aren't afraid to speak their minds on politics and beliefs. Don't be surprised if you hear something blunt in their music. They are a no holds barred – in your face – metal band! They are involved in the local scene. You may have seen them at some of the charity events as well as events that grow around the local scene. I've never seen them turn down a chance to rock out or blaze the stage unless there's a good reason. They are family oriented and it shows when you see them interact with each other and on stage. They are very positive and eclectic with their writing skills, but not afraid to rock the house. I really enjoy their sound but I wouldn't put them in any specific genre except metal, which I already mentioned earlier. Their recordings are sound and energetic. If you haven't obtained a copy of their EP then pick one up at their next show or go to their website to find out more: www.munkiegunn.com |
Review - Sign Of Lies: The Truth. Aug 2 2016
Written by Will Harrison
Sign of Lies: The Truth is a blast of great music! I enjoyed it thoroughly. It's a great mesh of several music styles including – Metal, Hard Rock, Hardcore and others. Because of that, it's hard to pin down a specific genre. That doesn't mean the album has to suck though, in fact this CD was full of surprises! I thought it was recorded very professionally. I felt all the levels were right and filled great guitar riffs that should satisfy any true rocker’s heart or need. When I go to a show, I always enjoy when the base drum kick and the bass guitar are a little louder in the mix, that way I can feel the beat. It gets my blood pumped and my energy rising. Maybe that just me, but I felt the levels on this album are set up similarly. Two thumbs up for that guys! I'm serious, I hate it when it all sounds the same! There's nothing more boring to me then when I'm listening to several bands and they all sound the same. With that being said these guys are killer on stage and on their album as well. They are a great group of entertainers as well as musicians! They are stellar! I highly recommend this one guys and gals. The album is available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, Google Play, and many other retailers. You can stream it on Reverbnation and many other sites. Also available on their website www.signoflies.com . |
Review - Oberon: Pale Blue Dot. July 13 2016
Written by Will Harrison
Oberon: Pale Blue Dot is outstanding! It’s a continuous collogue of rock n roll and space rock, that never skips a beat. It’s a Montague of great music centered around the feel of the late 70s and early 80s, all original music with a blast from the past. The album art is unique as well. The cover art is vibrant and visually describes creation vs destruction, similar to something you would find in a Neil Gaiman comic or novel, just without the dark gritty overtones. The inner cover has drawings of prehistoric creations or Dinosaurs as you might call them, with the lyrics for the album. This is a very eclectic band and this album displays that for both the listeners and the viewers. How else would you get unique song titles like Earthicanlullaby, Monsters of The Mesozoic and Pangea? I enjoyed this album to the max and I highly recommend it for your collection as well. Pick up Oberon: Pale Blue Dot at on all major music outlets. Oberon can be found on Facebook and other social media sites. Here’s a link for their music: http://oberon.bandcamp.com/ |
Review/Kinda Creepy: Kinda Creepy June 21 2016
Written by Will Harrison
Kinda Creepy just had their CD Release party at Snug Lounge in OKC and it was a blast. The album is self-titled Kinda Creepy; it’s loaded with tons of original Punk Rock tracks. I had to get a copy for myself. I wasn’t disappointed! In fact, I was quite pleased. It’s a steady fill of Punk Rock grounded in Oklahoma roots – Shawnee to be exact. My home town. When asked if they – Guitarist/Vocalist - Troy Miller, Drummer - Keith Kostura, and Bassist/Vocalist - Justin Clemmons -- were excited about this full length album - They said because local followers have been asking for an album for quite some time. They also said it’s good to feel the support and enjoy performing in the surrounding areas but always enjoy being home. Make sure to go out and support these guys at their next show! I highly recommend this album, so go get yourself a copy or two! Pick a copy up at their shows, CD Warehouse in Shawnee or contact them on on Facebook. |
Review/LoveBettie: Rise. June 3 2016
Written by Will Harrison
LoveBettie: Rise has a soulful lead backed by great music! I enjoyed the whole EP. The energy in the album is the same as their performance on stage. Obviously not the same thing as I enjoy live performances are better, but still the energy matches. I watched this group at Rocklahoma 2016 and immediately had to meet them and get a copy of what they were selling. What is that? Soulful Alternative Rock - well at least that’s what I would call it. The lyrics are full of jazzy tones followed by enjoyable rock inspired jams. While listening, I picked up on some tines nostalgic of the 8os and 90s. There was one riff that even reminded me of the first animated Transformers movie theme song. Obviously it wasn’t talking about giant robots blasting each other, but the music riff sounded similar. Front-lady Alexandra Naples has the look and style of the late Amy Winehouse but she infuses other styles of alternative rock when collaborating and performing with her A+ band. She was a pleasure to meet and chat with after the show I attended. She was very friendly and down to earth. I look forward to hearing this group again live, but until then I will be happy listening to this wondrous EP. Review/Absence Of Despair - Monster: Reborn. Mar 26 2016
Written by Will Harrison
Rhode Island’s Absence Of Despair was in OKC recently to perform with Final Drive. It was a great show that was put on by my friends at J.C. Entertainment! I enjoyed their performance so much that I had to pick up their albums, along with a cool poster of the band. I know I’m a geek, and I’m proud of it! Absence Of Despair: Monster Reborn is a great hardcore album that is filled with melodic vocals. It’s a non-stop party and everyone’s invited. It’s a hard-hitting combination of Hardcore and Metal. I found the recording to be well done and very professional. There is not a lot of feedback like you hear in lower grade recordings. I found it easy to understand, which is hard sometimes if you don’t have the lyrics in front of you. I dig the cover art, it’s awesome! Very bad ass! I didn’t have a favorite track on this one because they were all equally good in my opinion. I highly recommend this album. Pick up a copy of Absence Of Despair: Monster Reborn today! Review/Interview - Area Of Effect's New Single: Shanking Clyde.
Written by Will Harrison
Shanking Clyde is the new hit single from local original heavy metal band Area Of Effect. It is hard-hitting and yet progressive. I really like the sound they are going for. I decided to ask them a few questions about their single and where they are going as a band. Here’s what vocalist Steven Johnson had to say: Will: Tell us about what the new single is about. AOE: The new single is a dark take on the Pac-man series, which we describe as a metaphor for someone with an insatiable appetite, who keeps eating without ever being satisfied and eventually turns to the souls/ghosts of his victims. This hunger eventually consumes him and he devours himself, which is representative of his death animation in the game. Will: Are you happy with the end result? AOE: We’re very pleased with the way the track turned out. Trent at Bell Labs did a great job in the recording process and this was my first attempt at mixing and mastering a track myself, which I feel went well. There's definitely more to learn and I hope the forthcoming album reflects any growth I make along the way. Will: Where are you going with the new album? Will it be the same theme as the single? AOE: Our theme so far has always had strong gaming influences and I don't see that changing any time in the near future. The album will include references to Pac-man, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, Portal, Star Wars, and I try to keep the references subtle so it takes some work to figure out the theme of the track. As far as the attitude goes, the lyrics tend to vary between dark and comical so you'll see a mix of both in the album. From an instrumental perspective, we have a slightly wider range of melody and mood but overall the tone should be fairly consistent throughout. With all that being said, go check out the new single by Area Of Effect: Shanking Clyde. Available now on www.soundcloud.com |
Review: The Lucky Eejits - For Life. Jan 20 2016
Written by Will Harrison
The Lucky Eejits were a blast when I went to see them at Your Mom’s Place, which is located on North May in OKC - just off 30th street. While I was there, I snapped a few photos of the band and talked them into a video interview, which will be posted soon for all to see. I enjoyed the performance so much that I bought a copy of their three song EP “Voices”. I also received a digital download of their six song EP “For Life”. Both albums are great! I enjoyed them tremendously! They are very legit and recorded well. Despite being written about a band mate that had passed away, I found the albums uplifting and energetic. The album art for the six song EP is both horrifying and amazing – it features artwork of The Looney Tunes killing each other. Both albums are available on www.bandcamp.com The Lucky Eejits are powerfully driven and spirited. Coming from Oakland California, I was expecting some serious punk music and they didn’t hold back. They were personable and down to earth. Great guys that are very excited about what they do. Check them out on Facebook, Twitter and Bandcamp. |
Review: Teflos - Unpopular Opinion. Jan 1 2016
Written by Will Harrison
Teflos: Unpopular Opinion, is a free flowing, hard hitting, heart felt EP. It’s a non-stop ride through Hip Hop culture and sound. I could hear influences from many great Hip Hop artists. I heard Jamaican and island harmonies through out, as well. The straight-forward message and aggressive lyrics will have you begging for more. Mixed and mastered by Igloo Panda. Production by Teflo Dollar, Mars Deli, and Chip Mantooth-recorded in Del City. To see Teflo Dollar perform is a unique experience. He wears a mask while performing, I was curious so I asked him why. He replied, “I only wear the mask during certain times during my performance, always in photographs. It really is just my way of saying F the world and they don’t deserve the real me; we all wear masks in our daily lives to keep balance, because sometimes our true self isn’t for everyone”. You can find Teflo Dollar on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram. Go to www.soundcloud.com under Tefinition. |
Review: Killer Gandhi - Digital Messiah. Dec 17 2015
Written by Will Harrison
Killer Gandhi is a hard-hitting local rock sensation. With gritty vocals and a driving hard rock sound, they’re unstoppable, at least that’s the way it seems when listening to their EP. You can hear and feel the driving emotion behind each song. With songs titled Laugh Now Die later, Umbilical Jerky and Hostile Takeover - you know it’s going to be a riot when listening to them. These guys know how to party and rock a stage. I’ve seen them on several occasions at local venues. I always enjoy each performance. The music on this album has great sound structure and sound quality. They did a good job mixing it. Check them out live and get a copy of Killer Gandhi: Digital Messiah. Their album is a great gift for any of your rocker friends, I’m just saying. Follow them on Facebook and other social media sites! Also, go straight to their Bandcamp page: http://killergandhi.bandcamp.com |
Review: Hanging Hayley - On Our Own. Nov 22 2015
Written by Will Harrison
Hanging Hayley is a band that I’ve talked with on many occasions. They are a great group of guys. They recently had a CD release party for their newest album On Our Own at Thunder Alley Sports Bar. It was a great night and great performance. When asked, front-man Doug Bennett said they were highly impressed with the production of the album. What I enjoy about their sound is it’s reminiscent of the alternative music of the 90s - Foo Fighters, Offspring, Pearl Jam and Bush. I enjoy their aggressive lyrics and their “I just want to be my myself and I don’t care what you think” attitude. I say that because, there’s a lot of bands out there trying to be something that they are not. I recommend this album to all alternative rock lovers and those alike. Review: Gum. Nov 19 2015
Written by Will Harrison
Gum has a Pop Rock vibe reminiscent of seventies rock and styles that pre-date. I hear a lot of influence from Lennon and McCartney in the vocals. Even in the guitar and piano riffs.. I’m a big fan of The Beatles’ work, so it’s cool to find a band that has the similarities of such an iconic band. This album’s theme is the workings of a good love story, from the ups and downs to the happy go lucky sentimental stuff. Funny story - I used to play in a band with a couple of the members of Gum back in the day at church events. Good times Sam, Joe and Levi. I’m impressed with the sound quality and overall engineering. It was recorded at Bell Labs Studios in Norman, Oklahoma and engineered by Trent Bell. The cover art was done by Bjorn Bauer. My favorite tracks are: Golden Years, Love Her, Fly Me To The Ocean and Roll me Over. As I said before, the theme has the workings of a love story and I don’t lie. I recommend this album a lot. If you’re not in love with someone already, then by the end of this album you’ll want to be. |

Foo Fighters Concert: At The Chesapeake Arena. Oct 5 2015
Written by Jill Buchanan On Tuesday, September 29th, the Foo Fighters rocked the Chesapeake Energy Arena in downtown Oklahoma City. If you weren’t there, you missed one hell of a show! They played three hours of nonstop rock and roll. Dave Grohl and the band were on point during every song they played. They came out strong with Everlong and Monkey Wrench and continued to play 22 more songs to flood the night with some great music and some awesome memories for both young and old that came from near and far to see them perform. Even though Dave Grohl broke his foot on tour in Sweden June 12th, it has not stopped him at all from being as energetic and outgoing as the audience would want him to be. He has continued his American tour while sitting upon a giant light-up throne he had made just for him. The throne includes a place for his broken foot to rest upon while playing, lots of gigantic lights, and each side of the throne were made up of broken guitars. It even had a cup holder built in that Dave was quite proud of, and he mentioned it to the crowd and cheers us. The throne moved mechanically from the front of the stage down the runway to the very front. This is where I had the privilege of standing the entire evening. He told the audience, “I may not be able to walk or run, but I can still play guitar and scream.” And that he did! The Foo Fighters played all of the hits and all of my favorites, including The Pretender and All My Life. They dedicated My Hero to the sound and stage crew, which was really neat. When they introduced the entire band, each member played their own snippets of Van Halen, The Kinks, Rush, and Queen. It’s always a joy to see how they play into their own lives and interests during their introductions. |
The bass player Nate Mendel’s wife was in labor recently, so he did not know if he was going to make the Oklahoma City show or not. The Foo Fighters invited Chris Chaney from Jane’s Addiction to fill in for him. Nate Mendel did however make it to the show to perform, but they went ahead and invited Chris Chaney up on stage to help perform a song as a thank you for being there when they needed him to be. The opening act was Gary Clark Jr, an American guitarist and actor based out of Austin, TX. He is influenced by jazz, blues and soul music. He came on stage at the end of the show and played What Did I Do?/God As My Witness with the Foo Fighters. His opening act was very fun to watch and set the mood for some great rock and roll. I did not know who he was until he was announced as the opening act for this show, but I’ll definitely be checking him out from now on. The Foo Fighters were formed in 1994 and today consist of Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett, and Nate Mendel. They are an amazing group of talented men who can rock your socks off! If you ever get the chance to see them in concert, I highly recommend doing so. They play their hearts out to each and every member of the crowd like they were in your living room. The light show was amazing, and the screens in the rear of the band and up on both sides of the stage added a lot to the concert. My entire concert experience was heightened just by being so close to the band members and knowing that they wanted to be here as much as I was excited that they were here. Thank you Foo Fighters! |
Review: Meridian Lights. Sept 21 2015
Written by Will Harrison
Meridian Lights’ EP is amazing! I received a copy during an interview with them while at Backwoods Music Festival. They were a treat to talk to. I enjoyed hearing about their music and passion. They are very talented guys, and it definitely shows throughout the album. They have a wonderful Electronica/Rock/Soul sound! I would put them under the alternative genre just because they sound different than anyone out there. They have honest lyrics with great musical undertones. You can feel they have lots of energy while maintaining a mellow vibe. I personally enjoyed their title tracks: Scars And Breaks, Bombs and Lady Bartender. The overall vibe and feel of the EP is great! Recorded at Good Child Studios in Brooklyn, NY. Review: The Violet Hour - Insatiable. Sept 2 2015
Written by Will Harrison
If you’re looking for some good Goth/Metal, then look no further. I like the feel of this album because of it’s realness, its written about struggles and life issues instead of just normal run of the mill rock tunes. You can tell there’s feeling behind what they are saying. Add to that superior guitar riffs and melodic undertones and you have a great LP. I think the translucent approach is great. I can relate to it and I’m sure others can as well. The vocalist Alli Chastain is a driving force in this ensemble of rockers. I mean who doesn’t love hearing female vocals in a rock/metal song? I know I enjoyed it. I give it 5 out of 5 stars. I actually got the chance to meet, these rockers at Moosefest, a couple of weeks ago, and they were a delight to talk with. Originally from Fort Smith AR, these rockers have been all over the place. They had some great stories to tell! But that is for another time. Check these guys and gal on their website: www.theviolethourband.com You can also find them on Facebook, YouTube, Hastings, iTunes, Spotify, Xbox music etc. Enjoy! |
Review: Studda Budda - Overnight. Aug 26 2015
Written by Will Harrison
Studda Budda’s Overnight is loaded like no other with fresh sounds and hip-hop vibes. Coming straight out of OKC, this rising artist continues to thrill and amaze us with his realistic lyrics and entertaining beats. Micheal Stutson, a.k.a. Studda Budda, is a whimsical performer and a delightful person. He’s had a hard life like many, but he’s not afraid to share his hopeful spirit with the world around him. You can feel his hip-hop roots throughout this LP mingled with his positive vibes. The lyrics are catchy as I found myself singing along with the album the whole time. I highly recommend this one for all you hip-hop lovers out there in cyberspace. I give it 5 out of 5 stars. The album was produced by Dream Life Beats. All songs were written by Studda Budda. The album is available online at https://studdabudda.bandcamp.com and at a few local stores such as: Digit in The Plaza, Guestroom Records, Bad Grannys and Capital Bicycle Company. Review: Left To Die - Trust. Aug 5 2015
Written By Will Harrison
I must say...I’m happy with the sound of Left To Die’s new album Trust. It’s a good solid album. It’s clean and leveled out well - recording wise. It has a good driving force to it. It would be a killer album to add to your collection. I’ve heard these guys in concert and they always put on a great show, with that being said I was expecting a lot from this LP! I wasn’t disappointed, in fact, I highly recommend you give it a listen. It’s a good Hardcore Metal LP that will keep you wanting more. This album doesn’t slow down one bit, and it shouldn’t! It’s a freaking metal album! Do yourself a favor and buy this album. While you’re at it go and watch them live! Review: Longpig - Devour All. July 22 2015
Written By Will Harrison
Longpig’s debut album is making a smash locally and online with its diverse music styling and hard core vocals. I really dig the vibe when listening to it. It has a 90s rock feel added with intense vocals, much like you’d hear from a metal band. There was even an Alice In Chains guitar vibe going on in a few songs. I have to say it’s an impressive first album. I went to watch them live to get a real feel for their sound. As you know a recording can cover up things and expand vocals. I enjoyed their performance. Their stage presence was great. I dug the VooDoo/tribal /rock attire that was worn by all the members. It reminded me of a mash up of Gwar and the Quiet Riot album covers. With that being said, the album matched up well with their performance. If you get a chance, check theses guys out live! If your one that doesn’t go to shows, then you can always get a copy of the CD online. Review: Oberon – Through Space We Ride June 22 2015
Written By Will Harrison
Originally, I met up with these guys when they were performing at Thunder Alley Sports grill. They were a sight to see, fully decked out in space gear. They stepped on the stage and owned it. Through The Space We Ride - is a journey into sound, a journey of Stoner/Space rock to the extreme. It’s an onslaught of ear candy very smooth the arrangements and riffs are amazing and the recording quality is stellar! It was recorded by, the great Russell Brownfield at Artisan Studios. Some of you locals may know him as Papa Russ. He’s the guy to talk to if you’re looking to have an album made - Russ is the man! Though it was hard to pick a favorite - Space Lumberjacks would be at top of my list. It brought me back to the days of great experimental Rock n Roll. Along with entourage of great guitar riffs: it’s backed with powerful lyrics. A lot of passion was felt while listening to this LP. The album art is cool it was created by Front-man DJ Bryant. It’s very reminiscent of the stoner rock albums back in the day. The album cover displays a gray whale flying in front of the moon. I’m not sure what it means, but I’m assuming the track, Whisper Of The Whale is related. Either way I’m sure it’s an interesting story! I give the album 4 out of 5 stars. I enjoyed the grooves and vibe of the album, but I wish it were longer. Go and check it out for yourself. |
Review: Kali-Ra – Cocoon. June 15 2015
Written BY Will Harrison
The other night I received an email from Kali-Ra’s front-man, David Goad. Inside was an exclusive digital copy of their new album Cocoon. This album has been in the works for quite some time. I was excited to give it a listen, so I dove right in. From the start of the album I really connected with its emotion and intensity. Each song starts with a slow melodic rise and intensifies with bursts of Rock N Roll while keeping you connected with direct and emotional lyrics that hit you right in the face. Throughout the album I felt hints at loss and gain, growth and pain and the disappointments life will throw at you while revealing a light at the end of the tunnel. That may be confusing for some, but for artists and musicians it is the epiphany that guides us making us feel real and true to ourselves. I give this album 5 out of 5 Stars; it's seriously intense and well put together. The timing and arrangements are stellar, the composition and feel of the album is amazing. It has a great blend of dark and light. My favorites were: Break, Cocoon, Death Rattle and Building The Perfect Human. I enjoyed the build blended with intensity in each song. Honestly, it’s hard to pick favorites from this one, because I’m enamored with the whole thing. I highly recommend this one! Go check it out for your self! http://www.officialkalira.com/ www.kalira.bandcamp.com |

The Costanzas: Bad Habits - Review. MAY 5 2015
Written By Will Harrison
The Costanzas are hitting it hard with their new LP, Bad Habits. It’s all you’re looking for in a punk album and more. It’s fun filled solid recording, very professional. The album was recorded, mixed and mastered by Chris Harris at Hook Echo Studios in Norman. Jimmy, Drew and Snax, said they put a lot of themselves into this one, which makes it even more amazing. After spending two six - hour studio sessions, they have a clean solid recording. When I talking with the guys, they said a lot of work went into making this album. I personally hope you will enjoy this one as much as I have. Theses guys are a creative group of guys. Take the names of the title songs, for example: It's a Good Day to Die (Another Day), Road Rage, Chupacabra, Plan 9 from Outer Space and Bipolar Bop/Borderline Blues. My favorites were Chupacabra and Road Rage – the songs were very spunky and expressive. Go and check this album out. I’m sure you’ll agree with me, that this is a killer album. Until next time, thanks for the listen. https://www.facebook.com/the.costanzas?__mref=message_bubble http://costanzas.bandcamp.com/album/bad-habits |
Kirra: Run Away. Mar 19 2015
Written By Will Harrison
As soon as I left the concert I was truly inspired and excited to write this review. So get ready! Kirra - a reference to the Australian surfer term, knowing this one's mind would probably be convinced that their sound would be surfer type music. It's quite the opposite. It's a very hard hitting rock album. Reminiscent of my favorite rock style - Alternative Rock. Sharing the likenesses of bands like: Chevelle, Five Finger Death Punch and Seether. If you are a follower of my reviews you might have guessed that I am a huge fan of those bands. Kirra has a solid mix of this genre and holding their own with a unique sound. I enjoyed every song on the album, however, I want to share with you my favorite tracks. 1. Tappy Gilmore 2. Lies 3. Run Away 4. Downfall 5. Stay I highly recommend this album to you! Tod Kelih: Pictures Of My Soul. Mar 3 2015
Written By Will Harrison
If you’re ready for some easy listening with smooth sounds! This one has all of that and a bag of chips. I would put it in the genre of Soft Rock. I can’t think of any other artists or bands to compare it to. He really has his own sound, But it is a good one. This one would be perfect for a romantic dinner with your lady. It is also very relaxing. My son was listening to it with me while in the car and he fell asleep. So I don’t recommend it while driving at night for a long trip. It is a good recording, simple and smooth. He has a very professional sound. No overworking of any instruments. All songs are written and performed by Tod Kelih except the bass tracks. Recorded at Greykatz Studios in OKC. My favorite tracks consist of: 1. Masterpiece 2. Sever 3. Guess we’ll never know 4. Lingering in Vegas Tod also performs with tribute band known as Jim The Elephant. So for more information check out these links: https://www.facebook.com/JimTheElephant?pnref=lhc https://www.facebook.com/tod.kelih?fref=ts http://www.amazon.com/Pictures-My-Soul-Tod-Kelih/dp/B001GGWSGG/ref=sr_1_1?s=dmusic&ie=UTF8&qid=1425414405&sr=1-1&keywords=Tod+Kelih |
Final Drive: Lifes Work. Jan 26 2015
Written By Will Harrison
This is a hard rocking album, a must for those who love some good Death Metal! It is definitely one I've added to my collection. Before you ask…no, these guys are not from Oklahoma. That being said, they deserve a good review. They have a tight sound and professional look, the album art is phenomenal. Final Drive knows how to bring it and keep bringing it with catchy songs. The 90s nostalgia will hit you in waves with a continuous hardcore energy throughout the entire album. I will also add that these guys give a killer show and they are a must see. The album boasts eleven songs; almost all were written, performed and produced by Final Drive. The exception being Just Got Paid – ZZ Top and Ghostrider – Suicide, all songs mastered by Blood Red Recordings. Here are my personal favorites: 1. Training Wheels – Because it reminds me of my youth. 2. Buried In You – Because it’s naughty. 3. Ghostrider – Because I’m a comic geek and well.. 4. Just Got paid – Because I like me some ZZ Top. For more information about these guys check out these links: http://finaldrivemetal.com/ http://bit.ly/FinalDrive-Lifeswork http://www.finaldrive.org/ |
The Easy Lovers - Get A Job. Jan 20 2015
Written By Will Harrison
If you’re looking for a truly legit punk band, here they are. Their music is as fun as is their presentation on stage. No doubt that they are very talented musicians. They have a real fun, clean sound. I can’t say that about of a lot of punk bands. I’ve heard these guys live. They ring out very clear. A lot of times, with other groups, the guitar is too grungy or not leveled out well with the other instruments. This LP consists of 12 songs total. It was recorded by Chris Harris @Hook Echo Studios. I enjoyed this LP. It was fun and upbeat all the way through. My favorite tracks are as follows: Kill That Girl - because who hasn’t wanted to at some point! Pills For Pills – because it was a fun song. Forbidden Zone- because everyone likes a little danger. Dirty Secret- because who doesn’t have one or two! Well there you have it, my spill on The Easy Lovers. Here are a few links if you want to look them up. www.EasyLovers.bandcamp.com www.facebook.com/EasyLovers |
Pauly Creep-O: Some Kinda Backwoods Nasty. Jan 8 2015
Written By Will Harrison
Ok, so this ones all kinds of crazy! That's not me being disrespectful, it's just the truth. Honestly, I think he wanted it that way when he was recording it. Controversial as it is creative, it's guaranteed to keep you on your seat. Pauly Creep-O desribes it as "Voodoo Gospel" - I can see where he's going with that. The Bible quoting and Satanic incantations mix between each song would make any Bible Belt believer quiver with questions or in some cases...Disgust. Still isn't that the purpose for an album like this? To make people question the system or to question their core beliefs. This guy is definetly talented; I mean have you ever tried playing Bluegrass licks and mixing them with rock, while still making it sound smooth? It's not that easy trust me. This is a real complete album, even though there is no direct theme to be seen. I believe sometimes it's enjoyable to have a nice steady album that's not trying to sell you something. My favorite tracks are as follows: The Ballad Of Pauly Creep-O - Because It's clever. Succubus In Bloom - Because it kinda is. Insomniatic Rust - I like the title and I can understand the lack of sleep or having it at odd times. To check the album out for yourself, here's a couple of places: https://www.facebook.com/pplaster1/about Youtube.com https://soundcloud.com/pauly-creep-o/chocolate-jesus-ft-mike-randall |
Rick Toops : Rick Toops Dec 18 2014
Written By Will Harrison
Rick Toops - Is a local artist that performs with a house band called The Clique here at a the local venue - Friends Bar. Rick was a traveling musician for many years and now has decided to stick here locally. I recently listened to his music on Reverbnation. I found it to have a relaxing vibe. I could easily see him performing next to the likes of Kenny G or Micheal Bolton, not saying his music is like theirs, just that it would mesh well. On Reverbnation hes under the genre of - Pop/Contemporary music/Pop rock. I feel theres an Eighties Soul Rock vibe going on. I could definetly enjoy while hanging with friends at nice venue, like Friends Bar. You can also hear some of his Gospel roots as well when listening to his album. I had a couple of favorite tracks, they are as follows: Already home - Because it brings you back to your roots. Big Bad Mama - Because I can relate. Then Comes The Night - Because it gets me in the mood to hang with good friends. You can find him Rick Toops on Facebook and listen to his music at the following links: Reverbnation.com Cdbaby.com Amazon.com Itunes.com |
Bowlsey : Decorous Dec 6 2014
Written By Will Harrison
Bowlsey is fun and a good listen, they really get into their music. They have a relaxing- yet get up on your feet and dance vibe. Their new album Decorous is just that – A fun album. These guys and gal have been hitting it hard to get out a new album and I think the finished project is amazing. Another Round : Sonder
Written By Will Harrison
That’s what you say when your enjoying a cold one and you want more. I would say that could be said of this groovy rock band as well. With its hardcore sound and vocals, I think you’ll be asking for another round again and again. You can’t really miss with this one, it’s a quality album all the way through. With great album art by Rocky Gray of Living sacrifice and Evanescence fame, while having the production quality from John LeCompt of Evanescence and We Are The Fallen fame. It really makes the album complete. It has a strong, driving force throughout. They’re kicking butt and taking names. When talking to the band, I feel they have a strong confidence in where they are going as musicians and artists. They were very happy to talk about their experiences and the headliners they have worked with - such as Saving Abel, Smile Empty Soul, Saliva, Hurt, 12 Stones and Adema! Their official release of the album will be at Leons Lounge in OKC this weekend on September sixth, so make sure and go support these hard working musicians. The Secret Post : The Secret Post
Written By Will Harrison
These guys have a great retro eighties post-punk sound, yet very progressive. They put on a great show, wowing the audience with melodic measures of guitar riffs and and riveting vocals. They are a great talent, providing a real stage presence, a wonderful light show and thoughtful lyrics with a dark edge. They describe themselves as an expression of dark emotion, influenced by all that is dark. The Secret Post is sex, Dark romance and raw emotion. That being said...I found the album relaxing, with its melodic undertones. GJET : DIE RICH
Written By Will Harrison
After I saw him perform in person, I was sold. He has true heart and passion mixed in one, you can hear it through out the whole LP. His Album brought me back to my younger days as a boy living on the cheaper side of town in old Shawnee ,Ok. As a boy I enjoyed listening to old school Hip Hop, one of my favs was a compilation album called Rapmasters. Later on i got into hard core christian rap and and then on to Snoop Dog and many others. Over the years I've progressed into listening to more modern rappers, like local Hip Hop star StuddaBudda. While I was at his show he introduced me to GJET. He seemed rough on the outside which is normal for most Hip hop stars but as I listened to him talk and perform, another side came out. He was humble, he talked about Loss. He talked about heart and being real. My favs on the album are as follows... track 2 - Richard Pryor. track 7 Opinions and track 10- Real Is My Religion. For more info on GJET, you can go to WWW.GJETMUSIC.COM, Itunes, Youtube at IG: @gjetmusic and Twitter: @gohardjetson |
Architects:Border Wars Episode 1
Written By Will Harrison
A graphic novel packaged with a CD, Wow! When I decided to do a review I couldn’t decide if it should be on comic book news or the music scene page so I went with the music scene. I would say it’s a one of a kind. The premise of this book is of course Border Wars as it says… it’s a compilation of stories, some tormenting and some are confusing. Emotional stories of mistreatments and misunderstandings. You can tell it’s written by musicians. Very political, very moving and yet very artistic! Illustrated by Mallory Dorn shes very talented. You can find out more about her on www.mallorydorn.com When I went to their concert I enjoyed their rock sound, reminiscent of the nineties. I have to say as a comic enthusiast, I was excited when I saw they had a comic book. So I fought the crowds to get one, For a very reasonable in price…only ten bucks, you can’t beat that. I mean a comic book and album. Seriously it’s a great buy. The cover art stands out well. It’s packaged great. If you get a chance to grab a copy, it’s worth it. |
PaperScissor : Artifacts

These guys opened up for Blue October at The Diamond Ballroom, I mean how cool is that? Man did they put on a show! I enjoyed their sound and performance. They have an interesting sound very reminiscent of Modest Mouse and nineties style rock. If you haven't checked out their album "Artifacts" then you should give it a try. I picked mine up at the concert. I found them enjoyable to watch live, very whimsical and light hearted. My favorite track is track five" What are you...Count Dracula? Check out their Digital Album. Sticky Stranglets...They are a local band known for rocking the house, having just played at the VooDoo lounge. They really shined, pulling out all the shots. Hammering hard guitar licks, with aggresive vocals and drums. If your interested in getting in on the action? You should check out their new LP"Guidestones". You wont be disappointed. It's a very involved album, lots of energy. It's full of reminiscent rock sound and clever guitar riffs;which brings back the 70s,80s and 90s back in a whole new way. It's ear candy for the rockers soul. You'll enjoy it as I did, this groovy aggresive album, with It's title tracks- Topsy Turvy World, Black Forest Mountain and Smellin Evil. all killer tracks. KALI RA : Electric Living
Written by Will Harrison
I actually met up with Kali Ra’s lead vocalist and writer David Goad for coffee before I got a chance to listen their album. After talking to this remarkable man, I walked away with high expectations – I was not disappointed. David defined the band’s sound as a futuristic rock. The only description I can give after listening to the album is that it is very reminiscent of Bowie’s early style of music with a very modern sound. Amazing melodies and voice patterns, a well balanced recording…very professional and progressive, every instrument leveled without overpowering the vocals. Quality was not sacrificed. My personal favorite tracks are number 7 Discipline; I was impressed with its vintage yet progressive sound as if different eras of music were merging together. My second favorite track is number 10, Datapipe; it sounded as if David Bowie made a song for a horror film. Dripping with dark undertones mingled with pure rock. To find out more about Kali Ra find them on Facebook-Twitter-Youtube –Amazon. Here is their main link. www.officialkalira.com |
How to destroy Angels : Welcome Oblivion
Written By Will Harrison
The cover art is very psychedelic and very reminiscent of the seventies Pink Floyd album cover like The Wall mixed with the feel of a later Pink Floyd album like Wish You Were Here ; the one with two guys talking to each other while one of their heads is on fire but the case for this album has the guys head exploding instead. When reading through the credits , I was excited to find Trent Reznor's name. You know the Nine Inch Nails front man and I thought this really added to the flavor of the album. Its sound paralells Nine Inch Nails but with a much a lighter feeling to it but with a twist featuring a female lead vocal. Its amazing, I could listen to this album all day long. You can hear Trent's back up vocals every now and then as well, which is cool. It really lifted my spirits when I was listening to the very smooth, melodic and edgy sound. Balanced perfectly. What else would you expect from an album with Trent Reznor involved? My favorite song was the title track - Welcome Oblivion. The progression is smooth and I imagine it would be great to dance to. Listening to the album I could imagine it as soundtrack music for a good sci-Fi series. This album relaxes you while energizing you at the same time. In my opinion, there isn't a lot out there anymore that does that. So go out and get a copy or two of this album. I'm sure you will enjoy it. The Virgin Marys : King Of Conflict
Written by Will Harrison
When buying an album I always look at the album art to see if it sparks interest . The cover of this album showing a human backside, with no obvious face or bodyparts to define male or female, was a great way to keep from being stereotyped. Very eye catching with no fancy graphics; I feel a lot of times bands spend too much time on a big logo instead of woking on their craft. Clearly not the case with this one. Now, we go to the sound. I thought it was similar to that of the 90s alternative music spliced with vintage rock. The vocals were easy on the ears, at certin times I was reminded of Cake . They have a very progressive yet professional sound. I do a little recording myself and I appreciated the fact that they have a real clean sound; not too much distortion or over amounts of bass and recording wise, I found it well balanced. Not to mention, some really jazzy cool guitar riffs throughout the album. My favorite track happened to be number eight - Dressed To Kill, I just like the progression of it. If one were just looking at titles of songs, you might find this album to be kinda violent, with titles such as Portrait Of Red, Bang Bang Bang and Dressed To Kill. It's actually the opposite, with use of metaphors making them unique. Overall I found this to be a good listen and a good buy for anyone looking to add to their music collection or playlist.
